How the comparison works
Every comparison reads HUD's published Fair Market Rents for the two metro areas you choose and lines them up by bedroom size. Fair Market Rent is the 40th-percentile gross rent (rent plus tenant-paid utilities) for standard-quality units in a market, the figure HUD uses to set Housing Choice Voucher (Section 8) payment standards. Because both sides come from the same FY2026 dataset, the difference you see reflects genuine cost-of-housing gaps between the two markets, not differences in methodology. See our methodology for the full source registry and update cadence.
